7 Everyday Foods Quietly Draining Men's Testosterone
You're Not The Man Your Grandfather Was
New research says men's testosterone is down 54% since 1979 — and what's on your plate is part of the story. Most men eat #2 for breakfast.
It's not in your head, and it's not just age. Research presented this month at a fertility conference in London delivered a number that stopped the room cold: after pooling six long-term studies covering roughly 118,600 men across five countries, researchers reported men's average testosterone is 54% lower than it was in 19791 — and that the slide has picked up speed since 2000.
That headline number deserves a caveat most coverage skipped: it comes from a conference presentation that hasn't been peer-reviewed yet. But the underlying trend isn't in dispute. Published work going back two decades has found the same direction of travel — roughly a 1% drop per year, holding even after adjusting for age and weight2 — and the largest review to date, covering more than a million men, confirms the decline is real3.
So before you blame your age or your gym routine, look at your plate. Below are seven everyday items with real published evidence behind them. A warning: two of the foods you've probably been told to avoid aren't on this list, and the reason why is more interesting than the myth.
01 Black Licorice
The strangest entry on this list, and the one almost nobody sees coming. Glycyrrhizin — the compound that gives black licorice its flavor, and which also shows up in licorice tea and root supplements — interferes with an enzyme in the testosterone production pathway. In a controlled study, healthy men eating licorice daily for one week saw total testosterone fall 26%4. Worth knowing the limits: these were small studies from a single research group, free testosterone barely moved, and an independent team found a much weaker effect. But it's a real, measured, food-driven drop — from the candy aisle.
02 The Sugary Breakfast Bowl
Give a man a standard glucose load and his testosterone drops about 25% within the hour — and it's still suppressed two hours later. In one study of 74 men, 15% of those with normal levels dropped into the hypogonadal range on the spot5. Here's the twist researchers found next: a regular mixed meal did it too, slightly more than the pure sugar6. So this is about eating, not sugar alone — and the dip is temporary. It's the reason your doctor tells you to fast before a testosterone test.

03 Trans Fats — Not Seed Oils
This is where the internet gets it backwards. Seed and vegetable oils get blamed constantly, but when researchers measured it in 2,546 men, the association between polyunsaturated fat and testosterone vanished after adjusting for confounders. The fat that actually held up is trans fat. Young men in the highest quartile of trans-fat intake had total testosterone roughly 15% lower than those in the lowest — about 3.4 nmol/L — along with smaller testicular volume7. That's fried restaurant food, baked goods, and shelf-stable snacks. Note this is an association, not proof of cause.
04 Food That Sits In Plastic
It's not what's inside the package — it's the package. Phthalates, the plasticizers in wrap, containers and packaging, show up in the urine of nearly every man tested, and the associations are consistent. In a nationally representative US sample, higher phthalate metabolites tracked with lower testosterone in men aged 40 to 608. An independent analysis of 1,420 men replicated it, linking DEHP exposure to about 8% lower total testosterone9. Two separate samples, same direction. BPA, despite the headlines, has a much weaker case.

05 Beer — But Not For The Reason You've Heard
You've read that hops are estrogenic. In a petri dish, that's true — 8-prenylnaringenin is the most potent plant estrogen ever identified. But run the arithmetic and the scare collapses: a beer delivers on the order of a thousandth of the dose that does anything measurable in a human being10. No trial has ever shown hops lowering testosterone in men. The alcohol is the real story. A 2024 meta-analysis found chronic drinking significantly lowers both total and free testosterone and raises estradiol11. The effect per drink is modest. The nightly habit is what compounds.
06 Ultra-Processed Food
This one works in two steps, and both are well established. First: in a tightly controlled NIH inpatient trial where meals were matched for calories, sugar, fat and fiber, people eating ultra-processed food ate 500 more calories a day and gained weight — on an identical nutrient profile12. Second: excess body fat is one of the best-documented suppressors of male testosterone there is. In 2,395 men tracked for years, weight gain drove testosterone down and weight loss drove it back up, proportionally13 — and a meta-analysis confirmed that losing weight measurably raises it14. Ultra-processed food doesn't hit your hormones directly. It gets there through your waistline.
07 Low-Fat "Diet" Foods
The cruel twist the diet industry never mentions: your body builds testosterone out of cholesterol. A meta-analysis of intervention studies found men placed on low-fat diets ended up with lower total and free testosterone than men eating more fat15, and US survey data showed men on low-fat diets averaging about 33 ng/dL less than men who didn't restrict16. In fairness, this one is genuinely contested — a larger 2025 analysis found no difference, and the older trials used aggressive low-fat diets, not moderate ones. Call it a reason not to fear fat rather than a settled fact.
Cutting these back helps. But here's what most men over 40 miss: avoiding the wrong foods doesn't rebuild the testosterone you've already lost. A decline that started decades ago has to be actively supported — and that's where Total-T comes in.
Why Total-T Is Different
Made by Adaptive Health, Total-T is built around ingredients with published human trials behind them, at the doses those trials used: 400mg Tesnor (a pomegranate and cocoa extract; in two 120-man double-blind trials the 400mg dose raised free and total testosterone over 56 days)17, 10mg Boron (a small study found it raises free testosterone by lowering SHBG)18, 600mg Testofen fenugreek (a 120-man double-blind trial reported improved androgen symptoms and sexual function)19, and Tongkat Ali (a meta-analysis of 5 trials found it raises total testosterone, with the clearest effect in men who start out low)20.
